Starcraft is built on the same game engine as Warcraft II, and builds upon Blizzard's brilliant work in the area of RTS games. The graphics are very good, and expand upon the concept of isometric viewpoint games by warping the perspective slightly to give a more realistic perspective.

One cannot discuss Starcraft without commenting on the cinematics. Blizzard has produced a series of 3D movies delivering the storyline to the game in a way that rivals the best sci-fi films. Given their brilliance in both 3D rendering as well as storytelling, one must wonder if Blizzard plans on making a motion picture based upon the game.

However, what has given Starcraft staying power is the gameplay itself. The AI is very good, giving players many hours of competitive play against the computer. And the inclusion of an excellent map editor gives players the ability to design an infinite variety of maps and modules, as well as to download maps created by others in the Starcraft community from any number of fan sites.

If you like RTS games, Starcraft is the best one ever made.

Let's start off with the "average customer review" of these games, which, as i'm writing this, is 4 1/2 stars. THIS IS A CRIME. WHOEVER DID NOT RATE THESE GAMES WITH 5 STARS SHOULD BE HUNG AND SHOT.

Seriously, though, these games are amazing. Age of Empires? Psshhh. Starcraft was the first strategy game to contain THREE DIFFERENT RACES- the Terrans(humans), the Zerg, and the Protoss. Play Warcraft 2(which has only two races and no variance between them) and you'll understand how earth-shaking that was back then. Brood War, additionally, isn't a real expansion set. It's much more- almost a real sequel.

And this game never gets old. I bought the original a few years ago, and the expansion shortly after. I'm still playing them- fighting the computer, fighting real people, fighting whoever I can kill. Just when you think you kick ass, someone'll come along and beat you, forcing you to play even more.

In short, these games are well worth your 20 bucks. BUY IT NOW.

I borrowed Starcraft from a friend and after a few hours of playing knew that I had to get it. So, I went out and bought the Battle Chest. This comes with both Starcraft and the Starcraft: Brood War expansion pack, plus guides for each game and a technology tree map (shows which buildings are needed in order to build more advanced buildings). This is the perfect way to get started playing Starcraft. The game itself is excellent. My friends and I have spent many hours playing and plan on playing it for many years to come. Blizzard hit it right on the head with this game. If you don't have it get it right now. This truly is the standard to which all real-time strategy games are compared to.
