1 part Need For Speed
6 parts Scarface
Marinade in Miami Vice for 15 years
Serve hot, wet and bloody
In a blaze of chic suits, uzi fire and burning rubber, GTA is back with a vengeance. Basking in the glow of fictional Miami-lookalike Vice City, players are thrust headlong into the violent, seedy criminal underworld and held under until they stop kicking. Like it or not, this is a game that appeals to your very darkest side.
As new-on-the-scene gangster wannabe Tommy Vercetti, its the players job to carve out a name for themselves amidst the razzle and glamor of the 80's. Said name is accomplished, on the whole, by doing very bad things, such as stealing cars, knocking off banks, waxing rival gang members and generally giving 'the man' a hard time. Drag people from their 80's sports cars, hit them with a baseball bat and get on with life...its that simple. You're given the freedom to explore a hugely detailed living breathing Florida city, complete with neon soaked beach fronts, highly dodgy cuban poor-quarter, sky-rise downtown and most anything else you could think of. Missions are granted through your increasing network of criminal contacts, and there's literally hundreds of different jobs and capers to explore.
In fact, the 'simple' mechanics of the game conceal immense playability and structure, and you can play for hours doing not really very much at all...just cruising round, pushing the envelope of being a bad-guy and exploring the city. The graphics are a notch up from GTA: III, and likewise the sound is a marked improvement, with a very healthy selection of radio stations to choose from. Let it be said that if you generally shun 80's music you might feel a little swamped here, but hey, its all part of the atmosphere.
Its also worth noting, for anyone who has been living in a cave and hasn't heard the press hype, that this game is not one for the kiddies. Its not just that its very violent or profane...its that it basks, revels and rejoices in acts of wanton destruction, and sports a very sick (and very funny) sense of humor and irony. There's a good deal of drug abuse, lots of sexual innuendo and a veritable orgy of killing...indeed, many sub-missions involve seeing how many people you can flame-thrower or machete in a time limit. So heed the warnings, and don't take it too seriously eh?
The few downsides to the game include a fairly sluggish combat system (compared to other contemporary shooting/fighting games), a drop in the framerate when you get lots of cars on the screen and...well, thats really about all I can think of.
For those of sterner stuff, GTA: Vice City represents a new generation of video game, one that takes risks, appeals to an older, wiser gamer and most of all, delivers value for money in spades. There's at least a hundred hours of play, but really the possibilities are limitless.
I'm off to slip into my sport jacket, grab my street bike and katana from the garage, crank up Billy Jean on the radio and do some serious gaming.
