Page 4 / 10 The mutants put down their sandwiches solemnly to listen to the sad story ending which Edna could already guess. "The tragedy happened, when the president tried to use the microwave to warm up a hot dog..." the monster sounded like he was telling a romantic fairy tale in which the princess had accidentally killed the prince a moment before the happy ending. "I'm sorry," said Edna. She could see sorrow enfolding the mutants although they appeared quite satisfied with the sandwich they brought. Edna looked at those mutants sympathetically. From outside, she looked like a regular happy-girl, but she too had her own hidden sorrow within her heart. She tried to avoid them looking at her by biting into her own nice-looking sandwich just before she suddenly remembered something important. "What," she asked suspiciously, "is the meat in this sandwich?" "My wife..." "What?" She almost threw up. "You used your wife's flesh to make the sandwiches?" "No, no, that's not what I meant," Doctor Sabisco, temporarily laying down his grief, tried to clear up his point. "Although I have become a monster, I am not a savage. I wouldn't dare eating the flesh of a dead human body. What I have tried to say was my wife spent the last moments of her life making these beef sandwiches. Then the holocaust happened." "You mean your wife had passed away? I am sorry, " she said but she was relived about what she had swallowed. As if she didn't make her point clear, she added, "I am terribly sorry." Some of the mutants started to fiddle with something in the center of her room. Edna could tell Doctor Sabisco wanted to lend a hand but he seemed to be keener to keep talking to Edna. He said, "No, no. Don't be sorry. I am glad she was dead. I have never loved her anyway." Edna bit her lower lip, feeling a bit unsettled at his comment. "We never agreed with each other. It was as if quarreling had become our only means of communication. She hated me for not being a good father, not being a caring husband and not lifting up the toilet seat when I pee. I was struggling, suffering, suffocating until one day I finally decided to change my life."
