Magpie-Lark Foraging on the Ground, Queensland

I’m just here to inspect your gardening skills.

The magpie-lark stood out against the patchwork of green grass and scattered leaves. It moved with precision, its head dipping rhythmically as it searched for something unseen to my eyes. I couldn't help but admire its sense of purpose—each step deliberate, each glance calculated. Its black and white feathers seemed almost too crisp for a creature so close to the earth. A few steps away, a family paused to watch it too, their murmurs blending with the soft rustle of leaves in the breeze. The bird, unbothered by our collective gaze, continued its work as though we were nothing more than passing shadows. In that moment, I envied its focus—a clarity of intent that felt rare in a world so often distracted.
